New Road To Tuktoyaktuk Opens
New road marks the end of an era.
A $300 million dollar all season road project that took 4 years and several decades to plan opens November 15, 2017. For those of us who had the opportunity to drive the seasonal ice road from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk it is a bittersweet moment. That road was only open each year from mid December to April, leaving Tuk isolated the remainder of the year. It was quite an experience driving first on the Mackenzie river passing frozen ships on the way and then driving on the Arctic Ocean before reaching the frozen town of Tuk.
The following images were taken on the ice road during Drive The Globe's Arctic Circle Expedition in 2007.
